More than 100 prominent Indian citizens – including actor Naseeruddin shah, poet Javed Akhtar, lawyer-activist Prashant Bhushan, dancer-choreographer Mallika Sarabhai, and distinguished former police officer Julio Ribeiro – have issued a joint statement condemning the latest terror assaults in France and “outrageous” statements by Muslim religious and political leaders.

The statement, signed people from completely different religions, backgrounds, and professions, hits out at “self-appointed guardians of Indian Muslims… rationalizing cold-blooded homicide” and says “no god, gods, goddesses, prophets or saints could also be invoked to justify the killing of fellow people”.

“We, the undersigned, unequivocally and unconditionally condemn the latest killings in France by two fanatics within the name of faith. We’re deeply disturbed by the convoluted logic of some self-appointed guardians of Indian Muslims in rationalizing cold-blooded murder and deplore the outrageous remarks of some heads of state,” the assertion stated.

“Rationalising crimes by evaluating them to comparable crimes dedicated by others is an irrational and absurd argument, as two wrongs do not make a proper. We reject any ifs and buts within the justification of heinous crimes within the name of faith, any faith. No god, gods, goddesses, prophets or saints could also be invoked to justify the killing and/or terrorizing of fellow human beings,” it added.

The assertion additionally calls on Muslims in France to “cancel celebrations of the birthday of the Prophet as an indication of mourning and solidarity with victims and family members”.
